アメリカじゃ、目立つことは全然悪いことじゃない。いかに自分を輝かせるかという教育を受けてきましたから。ああ、日本じゃ1番になっちゃいけないんだ。2番手、3番手でいることがベストなんだと。

河合：その後、高校、大学でも、明るくて社交的なんだけど、内面にはそういう萎縮した気持ちがあって。苦しくて、30歳ぐらいまではいつもアメリカに帰りたいと思っていました。スチュワーデスになって、同じ制服を着ていること、同じマニュアルのサービスをしていることが苦しいと思ったのは、そこに理由があるかもしれません。
